Spring Lawn Maintenance and Renovation in McLean, VA.

After the cold wet winter, the chances are is that your lawn will need some kind of attention to get it in a healthy state for the coming summer season. At this time of the year most McLean lawns will be thin and covered by moss. However it is important that your wait until the soil temperatures rise and you get some growth before attempting any renovation program on your lawn.

Moss Removal.

Once the temperatures have risen you can set about improving your McLean lawn. If you have a moss problem it will need removing. This can be done by applying a product called lawn sand to your lawn. This product should normally take around 2 weeks to kill the moss. Once it has been killed it can then be raked out with either a spring tine hand rake or a powered lawn rake (recommended for a large lawn).

Aeration.

Aerating your lawn in the spring will help encourage root growth, relieve compaction, and dry out any wet areas on the lawn.

Over seeding.

You may want to over seed your lawn, if it has become very thin throughout the winter, or after removing the moss which has left it thin and weak. If you need to over seed your lawn it is important to wait until the ground has warmed up to encourage the seed to germinate. For better germination results prepare a good seed bed with a rake and top dress afterwards to protect the seed. N.B. Over seeding is ideally carried out at the end of august when the ground is somewhat warmer as this produces quicker germination.

Top Dressing.

After your lawn has been scarified to remove any moss, aerated and over seeded (if necessary) the next step is to top dress the lawn with a suitable material. This will help true up the lawn, improve the texture of the soil, and thicken up the grass coverage.

Mowing.

It is important not to mow your lawn too short too early, especially if it has been allowed to become a little over grown during the winter. Don't remove more than 1/3rd of the leaf during any mowing operation, regular cuts gradually lowering the height is the way to go. Wait until the grass starts growing consistently before lowering the height of cut on your mower.

Feeding.

After all of your work has been under taken, give your lawn a feed. Use a spring and summer fertiliser containing a high Nitrogen content. This will encourage strong grass growth at the time of year that you need it most, it will help the grass recover and produce a healthy sward.
